Glossary of Cannabis Terms
What’s the difference between a blunt, a spliff and a joint?
The Epibud Glossary of Cannabis Terms is here to help explain key lingo and verbiage.
A
Alcohol Extraction
One of the numerous methods of creating cannabis concentrate involves soaking the flower in food-grade alcohol for a specific duration, followed by straining the mixture. The remaining liquid is then heated gently to evaporate the alcohol while retaining the cannabinoids. It’s crucial to note that while this process can be relatively accessible, it can also be unsafe if not executed properly. Therefore, it is important to follow a reliable recipe when attempting to produce concentrates at home. The concentrate produced through this method is not suitable for smoking or dabbing, but it can be highly useful for creating edibles.
B
Blunt
Another popular choice among cannabis enthusiasts is the blunt. Blunts are larger than joints and spliffs, and they can be easily identified by their color and texture. They are rolled using tobacco leaf wraps, although tobacco-free alternatives are also available in the market. Blunts are characterized by their thickness, aromatic nature, and slower burn compared to joints and spliffs.
Bong/Bubbler/Water Pipe
The market offers a variety of bongs, some of which may be labeled as “Bubbler” or “Water Pipe.” However, it’s important not to be confused by these names. Ultimately, they are all types of glass smoking pieces known as bongs. Bongs utilize water to filter out impurities and cool down the smoke before it reaches the mouth. Essentially, bongs are larger pipes that incorporate water filtration.
Broad Spectrum
An extraction process that pulls the majority of cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant, while removing any traces of THC. This term is typically used when referring to CBD products.
Budder
Budder is a cannabis concentrate known for its soft and smooth texture. It has a loose and oily consistency and is often referred to as BHO (butane hash oil). Budder is a cannabis concentrate that shares a texture and consistency similar to butter, hence its name. Its intermediate state between solid and liquid makes budder a popular choice for dab rigs. The malleable texture allows for precise control when scooping the desired amount onto a dabbing tool. Consequently, budder is often recommended as an ideal starting point for individuals who are new to dabbing, as it offers a user-friendly experience.
Burn One
The act of smoking weed. “Burn one” can be used colloquially to mean consuming cannabis in any form, but more specifically refers to the combustion of a small-to-moderate amount of pot often rolled up into a joint.

Concentrates
Refers to highly potent cannabis extracts like wax, budder, shatter, etc. They’re produced by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis flower in a variety of solvent-based and solventless methods.
Concentrates are extracted substances from the cannabis plant that deliver a significantly more potent high. Through the use of solvents, the most desirable components of the plant are extracted while maintaining their consumable state for vaporization and inhalation when heat is applied. Concentrates come in diverse forms, spanning a range of viscosities from liquid to solid.
They can be consumed through various methods that involve intense heat, such as using advanced vaporizing rigs or rolling up a coil of wax into a joint. More about concentrates

The art of interpreting terpenes through smell. Interpening helps cannabist connoisseurs evaluate flower quality and predict its effects. Its a solution to an industry problem whereas a cannabis interpener can identify quality without a lab test or description to aid them in identification.
A cannabis interpener is very similar to how a sommelier tastes, smells, and evaluates wine.
J
Joint
The joint stands as the quintessential and most traditional method of consuming cannabis. It consists of rolling papers, finely ground flower, and usually a filter. Joints have earned various nicknames such as Js, doobies, pinners, and more.
When joints are pre-rolled and purchased from a dispensary, they are often referred to as pre-rolls.
K
Kief
Kief refers to the powdery and crystalline substance that separates from the buds.
Kief possesses a remarkably high potency, even stronger than the flower itself. Kief can be pressed into hash, used in food, or sprinkled on top of flower. Kief is the concentrated accumulation of resin powder. It serves as a potent addition to any cannabis consumption, containing high levels of THC and terpenes.
Most cannabis buds possess a coating of kief, which can be extracted through various methods. One method involves freezing and shaking the buds to separate the kief. Alternatively, grinding the plant matter in a grinder with a specialized compartment, known as a “kief catcher,” equipped with a fine mesh screen allows the kief to pass through and be collected.
L
Live Resin
Live resin is a cannabis concentrate obtained by extracting the essential oils from freshly-harvested and frozen plants using solvents like butane or propane.
Live resin is a type of concentrate obtained from freshly harvested cannabis plants that have not undergone the curing process. It derives its name from the fact that its aroma and flavor closely resemble that of a live cannabis plant more than any other extract. This method of extraction also yields a viscous consistency that is highly favored for dabbing purposes.
